Girolamo Santacroce was the greatest sculptor from Naples during the Renaissance, and one of the greatest technicians of carving marble before Bernini. This marvelous staue of Saint John the Baptist is one of a pair with Saint Benedict from a marble altarpiece in Capua and is in particularly outstanding condition.
