Girolamo Santacroce was the greatest sculptor from Naples during the Renaissance, and one of the greatest technicians of marble carving before Bernini. This marvelous statue of Saint John the Baptist is one of a pair with Saint Benedict from a marble altarpiece in Capua and is in particularly outstanding condition.
